The White Peaks Challenge. Seen it, heard it, but not actually done it? So what’s involved and why is it THE ultimate Ski Challenge for 2006...?

The White Peaks Challenge – 11-14 March or 16-19 March 2006.
If you think you’ve got what it takes to ski or board 24 peaks in just 48 hours then Scope’s White Peaks Challenge is definitely for you!

What is the White Peaks Challenge?
It’s the biggest UK charity ski and board event. You’ll ski 24 peaks in 48 hours – that’s the equivalent of descending Everest twice. We ski four fantastic Austrian resorts from our base just outside the fabulous resort of Zell am See. You can choose between two dates in March, taking just 2 days out of the office and use it either as your ski trip for 2006 or in conjunction with other holidays. In return for raising the minimum sponsorship of £1,500 your travel, accommodation, food and ski hire (if required) is all included.

How will I raise the money?
Once you’re signed up we’ll send you a detailed sponsor pack full of fundraising ideas along with examples of how past participants have raised their money. Ideas range from the tried and tested such as supermarket collections, company fundraising and pub quizzes to the wild and wacky such as getting your head shaved or dressing up in your ski gear and doing a pub crawl! We’ll also support you every step of the way.

Why will people want to sponsor me to take part in a “ski holiday”?
This really is no holiday. You’ll be skiing from the moment the lifts open until the pistes close with not so much as a coffee break. You’ll grab your lunch at the bottom of the slopes before jumping back on the next lift to complete the next peak. You’ll also be spending the next six months raising valuable funds for disabled people and whilst this can be fun, it’s certainly not easy! And if you’re still worried about asking friends, family and colleagues for the money, you can pay the costs of the trip yourself and that way every penny you ask for goes straight where it is needed in supporting disabled people throughout their lives.

How good a skier/boarder do I need to be?
You’ll need to be red-run competent but people of all different abilities and age groups take part. We ski in groups of 10 according to your ability and you’ll find you’re well matched in terms of pace and technique within each group. What really makes the Challenge is the sheer variety of people that sign up for it – there’s great camaraderie and a real team spirit.

Who’s involved with the Challenge?
Well, the tour and travel is all arranged through adventure sports company Tall Stories and Scope enjoys the support of the big guns in the ski world. Scope’s Ski & Board Events President is former Olympic skier Martin Bell who has taken part in many of the challenges and will be joining us again on the Austrian slopes next year. Scope’s official marketing partner is The Ski Club of Great Britain, and Ellis Brigham Mountain Sports works with Scope to ensure all participants are properly kitted out for the slopes - offering a discount at their stores for challengers!

Calling all female skiers and boarders…
Next year’s Challenge is being endorsed by Jenny Jones, the professional snowboarder and winner of the 2005 British Snowboarding Championships. In the past few years the ladies on the trip have been outnumbered by the men so we’ve asked Jenny to help re-tip the balance. Jenny says “I think it’s high time we put an end to this tradition so Scope has asked me to endorse next year’s challenges to do just that! The White Peaks Challenge really is a fantastic way of doing something you love for a great charity, so what are you waiting for!”

What do I need to do to take part?
Places are limited so all you need to do is call 0800 0191 200 quickly to order your enquiry pack or alternatively download them from their website. You’ll then need to return your application and medical forms with a non-refundable (if accepted) entry fee of £100.

Scope also organises the Colorado Ski & Board Challenge in January 2006 and also again in January 2007. If you’re a fast and furious skier or boarder and can handle 6 of Colorado’s finest resorts in 6 days then call 0800 0191 200 for more information.

For more information on either challenge then please don’t hesitate to contact Lucy Dawes from Scope on 020 7619 7288. We hope you can join us on these incredible challenges in 2006 and make a real difference to the lives of disabled people.
